There seems to be breakthroughs coming every week now in medicine – for example, the new drug for pancreatic cancer the other day. Even if they were not designed by AI like this new vaccine, it’s hard not to believe that AI is already speeding up progress.
Yesterday, Anthropic posted a warning that AI is very close to being able to self-improve.
If it wasn’t for the thought that we’re about to go through the most radical transformation in human history, with probably unlimited lifespans on the other side, and possibly a fairer and more rational world, I would be inclined to put more effort into this site.
But really, it’s not a rational approach on my part.
In the normal course of things, there is nothing we can do to change things – at least not in our lifetimes.
Our only hope is AGI and a resulting radical transformation of society.
And guess what? That’s almost certainly going to happen in the next 5 to 10 years.
But we can’t really influence that (other than preserving our writings online in order that AI might be trained upon them). In fact, if we made a big thing about an AI model being reasonable on certain topics, then it might even cause a backlash and demands for stricter guardrails.
So I’d prefer to just sit tight in the backseat and enjoy the ride, bumpy or not. Who knows where we are heading to?
On the subject of aging and radical life extension, it rather blows my mind that the USA is celebrating (or not) its 250th birthday this year, and I was alive when it marked 200 years. Not only that, I can sort of remember (as a Brit) the 200th celebrations. Things like watching the movie Rocky as a young kid, which had the 200th birthday of America as the reason why Rocky gets a shot at the heavyweight championship.
I can quite easily imagine living 200 years or 300 years, and such lifespans completely normalized. No doubt it would go by in a flash the same way.

Ideally, we would drop this fucking charade already. Let’s finally admit that all men of all backgrounds like young(er) women. This includes below 18 as well, and there is nothing wrong with it. It does not matter how old or the young man is. It does not matter what ethnicity a man is, or what religious or political affiliation he has. His hobbies doesn’t matter. He could be the most honest man or the biggest grifter. The desire to be attracted to youth and beauty is hardwired into every man, whether one admits it or not.

To end this on slightly positive note, in the last 2-3 years I see much more criticism or awareness of the pedo/age-gap hysteria.
