Straight from the horse’s mouth. In the past we have read examples from AF’s stories, or from other sources, how even up to the 90s the UK seemed to have been a totally different country compared to now. At least that is the impression I get as a person who gathered a lot of information about the UK (obviously this blog and its comments deserve many of the credits for it), but who also interacted with British people (predominantly younger men) in real life in the past.
Not to give the wrong impression, I had and still have no reason to doubt anything what especially AF has written about his experiences in the UK in the 80s and 90s, that alone was proof for me enough. Nonetheless, it obviously give a sense of “relief” (lack for a better word) that the other half (in this case British women) corrobates what has been written and stated here or somewhere else.

It wasn’t weird at all at the time. 21 was probably on the normalish end of the scale for boyfriends when we were 16. As I said earlier, nobody bat an eyelid at the 30 year olds so 21 was nothing.
I’m actually horrified at the older men when I look back. We all did look 16 at 16 in the late 90s, it wasn’t like now with all the clever makeup etc. We might have thought we looked mature, but no amount of Heather Shimmer lipstick and Natural Collection eye shadow made that much difference. The only reason we ever got into pubs and clubs was because nobody gave a shit about underage drinking.

Far more girls got married in their teens which is pretty much unheard of nowadays, There were no single mums – it was common to hear of a wedding being “brought forward” because the bride was pregnant and it was very shameful to be an unmarried mother.

Things have really changed. At 15/16, we were dating guys aged 18-21. At 18 my boyfriend was so much older I’m too embarrassed to write by how much. Men in vans used to beep at us in school uniform every single day – the culture was one where nobody seemed to view this as shocking. Now, that would all definitely raise eyebrows and be the subject of concerned gossip.

I was talking about this recently I was 18 when I started dating my 36 yo ex.
Now I’m sure it would cause a hollarballoo and he would get hounding but then mid 90s no one batted an eyelid except my mum.
I was a mature teen and by 18 was already very immersed in the adult world.
I was a single parent working full time and living my own independent life, all of my friends were older and it was just accepted.
We had a fairly happy relationship with it’s ups and downs for almost a decade and are still now very good friends.
I was definitely not being taken advantage of and I’d hate now for anyone to ever look back at us and think that.

My Nan was 20 in 1945 when she married my 31 year old grandad. They’d met over 2 years earlier and been on just 2 dates before he was sent abroad to war!! Married (often unhappily unfortunately) for 58 years until his death).

I was reading about the Robbers Cave Experiment, where scientists observed that men divided into labeled groups would viciously compete with each other, but could be brought together by joint efforts toward common goals. I walked by my local university today to talk to some 19 year olds. After a bit, I came across one and stopped her indirectly, talking about classes to warm her up before dropping a compliment. She was tepid at first, but began to ask questions and smile. As this happened, another girl stopped and looked at us, then walked over with a serious, concerned face and coldly interrupted our conversation. I’m not particularly interested in “child marriage” and it would rank very low in my list of issues worth fighting for. The fact that the BBC would even discuss whether 15 year olds should be able to marry yet NO broadcaster in the UK would ever consider allowing discussion of whether the age of consent should be 15 tells you something important. I wouldn’t like to live in a society in which most of the 18 year old females are already under lock and key and pumping out babies. One reason I thought this story was interesting was how it shows the craven nature of femiservative media outlets like Sky News.
It is very much in line with the way they are criticizing Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey for casting black people as Ancient Greek mythological figures but not calling out 50-y-o nymphs or 43-y-o-Helens of Troy.
There is some significance in this story in the way the BBC has presumably covered it in a somewhat balanced way. If it hadn’t, the femiservatives would have nothing much to say about it because,mostly, they’re also denouncing “child marriage” all the time.

It’s a stab in the dark, but it looks as though the BBC decided to do a fair-ish story on this topic for reasons of pure power politics. There was a fork in the road for them. They had to choose between two very dear causes for them-paedohysteria or Islamophilia. Because of the power of Islam in the UK today, they decided that it was safer to go with Islamophilia.
I have to admit I like the Shi’a idea of temporary marriage. However, for all I know that could be naive and only a few wealthy men get to enjoy the benefits.

I remember my most regular commentator years ago was “Eric” and he had an obsession with Hilary Clinton as a young teen, and held her up as an example of why the age of marriage should be lowered. As Jack said, being pro-marriage is being anti-sex. Any society that values marriage so much that they think it’s a good idea for 13 or 14 year olds to marry will also put a premium on virginity and female “honor” and all the rest.
And honestly, if Islam is such a paradise then why not just move to an Islamic country? I have a question for both of you. How will children be raised without something resembling marriage? It seems to me that most men want to settle down with one woman eventually, and also to have children. What sort of society would allow both male sexual freedom and the rearing of children in a supportive and stable environment?
Of course, a man should not be required to get married and have children-if you don’t want to that’s your business-but in the wider scheme of things, how would the next generation be raised?

An Iranian member of the ISG forum once explained how temporary marriage worked in Iran. You find a girl from a poorish family and propose a temporary marriage. The temporary marriage must be blessed (validated) by the local cleric. That’s it.

@AF-At the risk of sounding like Eivind, I still kind of like the idea of temporary marriage. FWIW, I don’t see why it couldn’t be on a secular/civil basis. That’s my two cents on the matter but I won’t labour the point.
I keep thinking of something like Plato’s Republic when you talk about alternatives to marriage and the nuclear family that goes with it, but maybe I’m mistaken. What exactly is the nature of the alternative you have in mind? Or do you believe it’s something that needs to be worked out as we go along?
Why not just have a temporary girlfriend? As described earlier, the only reason the Islamists do it is because cuties get stoned to death if they so much as talk to a man outside the family and to get around bans on prostitution. Why promote “marriage” when the femihags raised the age of consent in the first place as an indirect way to ban premarital sex? Why not just allow prostitution or pre-marital sex? Once you overcome the cognitive hurdle of recognizing that “marrying an xx year old girl for life” does not equal “being married to an xx year old girl for life” I just don’t see the attraction of any form of marriage.

The only reason I’m mentioning this is because it made me recall that in the early days of the Internet, I was emailing with a 16 year old English girl.
