Votes for Women and Chastity for Men!

Excerpt from ‘Votes for Women’ (Paula Bartley) Hodder Education

Until the work of feminist historians in the 1970′s, most history texts ignored the emphasis placed on sex and morality by the suffragists and suffragettes.  The few historians who did mention it ridiculed the suffragettes.  For instance, the suffragette slogan ‘Votes for Women and Chastity for Men‘ is seen as an amusing peculiarity by George Dangerfield in the 1930′s and Roger Fulford in the 1950′s and as an example of spinsterish eccentricity by Andrew Rosen in the 1970s.  However, the relationship between sexuality and the vote has enjoyed a long history in the annals of women’s suffrage.  Both the suffragists and the suffragettes placed women’s franchise within the wider context of sexual politics and took the question of sexuality very earnestly indeed.  For some suffrage campaigners such as Millicent Fawcett and Christabel Pankhurst the vote was as much about improving men’s sexual morality as it was about improving women’s working conditions.

  1. Antifeminist:
Interesting analysis. I’ve theorized that the trend towards a Social Converatism feminist variant is really a combination between latent cultural female pedestalization and neo-puritan morality. It’s interesting that a lot of White Knights are Socons and fully embrace the ‘strong, superior female’ as the archetype.

During the last election cycle here it was unbelievable to watch the White Knights practically worshipping the man-hating, cougarish Sarah Palin. Palin has spawned a following of female Socon imitators, who refer to themselves as ‘Mama Grizzlies’. Somehow, I don’t envision sow bears as an especially appealling feminine archetype, but it looks like that’s what feminism is evolving into.

  2. LOL…
Yeah at least a ‘Cougar’ is the equivalent of a slim and nubile woman in the animal world, but a sow bear is more the animal world’s representation of a classic feminist FRUMP!

  4. Actually Eric I don’t think you will like it all that much.
All I gleaned from that article is how this right-wing conservative ‘tea party’ is run by a bunch of hard-core religious femiservatives whose ultimate goal is to turn America into a conservative, ultra-puritanical, God Femihag-fearing, gynocratic dictatorship; where needless to say: no men other than white-knights and total manginas will want to live nor be welcomed by the the majority feminist population…

  5. Highwayman & Alan:

Things are even worse than I thought. I knew that the Mama Grizzlies agreed with a lot of feminist precepts, but didn’t know they’d gone so far as to admit openly that they were feminists, too.

And how do you like how that femihag author—one of the Radfem Sisterhood from UC-Berkeley—forgot all her ultra-liberal politics and jumped on board with Team Woman? I hope all those liberal manginas and male-feminists paid really close attention to that because it’s a bell-weather of what their future value to the feminist movement really looks like.

  6. Alan:
I’d forgotten about this until you just mentioned it, but in old American slang, a ‘she-bear’ referred to a type of female noted for aggressive, bad tempered, and domineering behavior. I haven’t heard that term since I was a kid, it must have fallen out of disuse as the type of women it described became more commonplace! LOL

  7. I believe you live in Australia, Alan – if I’m mistaken I apologize. In any case, a cougar might mean a slim and nubile female in the animal kingdom, and perhaps even in Australia, but in the USA it generally means a fat, over the hill baby mama, with 5 or 6 tats and a big mouth constantly bitching that ‘there are no good men’ to support her, cater to incessant demands and financially support their illegitimate offspring :( )

All in all, the early mover and shakers in the suffragist movement seem to have been only a pale shadow of today’s feminist hags. Think of what those country bumpkins could have done with gems like this, from Naomi Wolf’s book Vagina.

“This is a time in which everybody is on the verge of a global awakening from a certain kind of torpor,” she said, eyes sparkling. “That’s why there’s this doubling down on the power struggle over the vagina. But this is a moment for women. We are going to have to reclaim the vagina as central to everything.”

The whole book is about a profound brain-vagina connection – LOL – and they always accuse men of thinking with their penis. Projection, me thinks.

  8. Alex:
The American Cougars are about as you described them; however every last one of them no doubt imagines themselves a sleek, sexy, nubile forest-sprite anyway. Yuck…I really want to expat sometimes!

  9. Naomi Wolf pretty much confirms Sexual Trade Union theory every time she opens her mouth (or should that be opens her ‘vagina’, LOL).

There’s a video on YouTube of her defending Islam and the right of Muslim women to wear the hijab (and not just in the ‘cultural marxism’ manner – really vehemently defending the right of women to wear even the burqa and hence not to be ‘sexually objectified’ by men).

  10. You and I both, brother. I have to believe, that somewhere out there, is a tropical island with pretty girls, great food, good music, where men such as us can gather in peace and live in happiness. Build sailboats during the day, fish/spearfish, make love, and live, damn it, live!

  11. That’s the odd thing, isn’t it? They fight for Arab women to wear the burka, they crow about how it gives them dignity, freedom from the sexual degradation men subject women to – but modern feminist wouldn’t be caught dead in a burka, many of the good looking feminists wear high heels and form flattering clothes… What’s up with that, eh???

I think they’re thinking – good, Yasmina, cover up baby – that’s one less woman I have to compete against.

  12. QUOTE: “They fight for Arab women to wear the burka, they crow about how it gives them dignity, freedom from the sexual degradation men subject women”

Also take note how they rarely protest the fact that islam allows muslim men to marry non-muslim women but does not allow muslim women to marry non-muslim men (they appreciate the fact that this double standard limits sexual competition from otehr women whilst increasing teh competittion for them) despite the fact that feminists WILL protest catholicism’s rules regarding admission to the priesthood.

  13. Alex:
I actually know an ex-MRA blogger from NZ who did exactly that. The last I heard from him, he was talking about relaxing and drinking home-made beer from the hops he’d planted, and was planning a deep-sea fishing expedition.

Hearing this kind of thing makes me wonder why I put up with the US at all. BTW, I’ve had my eye on the Dominican Republic for awhile now…

No, you’re not mistaken, I am indeed an Australian and live in Australia, under the misandric tyranny of the Australian feminist totalitarian state. :)

Be rest assured Alex, a ‘Cougar’ in Australia is EXACTLY as you’ve defined (above) to the letter, for your local American version!

Thank you for cheering me up at last – I was starting to feel a bit down until now.

  15. Alan, if the Aussies, on the other side of the world are also corrupted, and I know a majority of Americans are corrupted, and increasingly the Euros, I think we can make a good case for a Lord of the Rings scenario – lone men, groups of men and the remnants of traditional societies will be like beams of light, surrounded by the darkness – I shall dream tonight, of fat feminist orc like hordes with sharp teeth and weapons coming for me. I intend to train in Pencak Silat, Escrima and kenjutsu so that I might be ready when they come for me.

Highwayman, I was not aware of those facts concerning Muslim men and women marrying non-believers. The funny thing is the modern Muslim men can make a good case for marriage with Western women, if the women are at all traditional. The Muslim men consider it their job to support the family and usually work hard, at least judging by the ones I’ve met – an Egyptian architect, Persian restauranteur and an optometrist. All a woman has to do is crank out a couple of kids, at least one of them a male, and they can kick back and relax.

  16. Antifeminist:

I thought you might like this specimen of some anti-sufftagette film. It’s a cartoon about a minute long from 1912:

There were a lot of anti-suffragette cartoons and films being produced in the silent-film era, but mostly they seem to have disappeared from public access!
