This piece in particular honed my interest. Granted there are numerous falsified data and claims surrounding sexual trafficking and the like. However, the argument about Nepal is somewhat skewed. Maiti Nepal, who I have worked with has never posted such outrageous statistics. For example in 2009 Maiti Nepal's Transit Homes rescued 86 girls from the brothels that they were unable to intercept at borders. Many of these girls were drugged and transported by people they knew into Nepal, but are not necessarily from Nepal. Part of this article expressed concerns that the statistics on trafficking were enormous compared to female populations, and the fact that some of the girls trafficked into Nepal are not from Nepal in the first place may be cause to that. Also the comment on what would have to be done to, by definition, enslave them and keep them there, is being done everyday, including abortion services in addition to security, meals, etc. Girls are abused or killed if they refuse service everyday, some even being burned to death. The reasons law enforcement does not get involved, or is even involved in the trafficking is because of how profitable red light districts are. While I agree there are sex workers that simply "lie" about being forced, some of the traffic victims are as young a 7 years old. A child at that age does not have sexual desires, as I am sure you will agree. That is why there is molestation separate from other sex charges. I could go on about this forever, but I am not going to. Half the Sky gives examples of when females were able to escape, but after going to the police were arrested for illegal immigration (once again being trafficked outside their native country) and then re-trafficked by the police.
